James McMahon, a partner in a prestigious law firm in Connecticut, learns he received checks throughout his life from a mysterious trust. All were carefully invested by his parents. A startling event made him the executor and sole beneficiary of this trust worth close to a billion dollars. Shortly after, his beloved parents die tragically while on vacation. A few months after their deaths he learns that he was the product of a rape and was adopted as an infant. Devastated, James rationalizes this as a calling for an antiabortion campaign when he realizes he might never have been born if current abortion laws were prevalent at the time of his conception. The trust provides seed money for the purchase of the young women’s home where he was born. His plan was to care for unwed mothers, victims of rape and women with unwanted pregnancies if they carry the pregnancy to term. An adoption service would provide for unwanted children and mothers would have access to quality psychiatric care and a variety of educational services, including college. Costs for services were left to the individual’s ability to pay. Next, he purchased a large hospital in a major city and converted into a women’s hospital where abortions would not be allowed. He soon became a national antiabortion figure. Plans are made for more women’s hospitals with each to have the latest and the best physical facilities and the best professional staff in the specialties involved. Concurrently James does intense and fruitful investigation into the lives of his biologic parents. His biologic father’s genius resulted in a huge company which among other things produced highly secret products for the government. The trust fortune’s huge block of publicly traded company stock allows him to review years of company records. Earnings were excellent for each year studied; still his trusted accountant discovers rampant fraud by the CFO and CEO. He learns the alcoholic CFO is actually his half brother. James cleverly rids the company of both men. As a result the company’s profits soar and his trust shares to dramatically increase in value. The final irony is his only daughter is raped and becomes pregnant. To avoid embarrassment to her father she has an abortion in Mexico and dies shortly thereafter. A letter addressed to her parents is found in her worldly possessions. In part it reads, "My pregnancy was the result of a terrible rape. I know you both place a value on life at any stage. I could not have a child like that and I hope someday you’ll understand that any pregnancy resulting from rape should be aborted.", Good Books To Read 2016 .
